In a significant administrative blunder, panchayat elections in Bavasni village, located in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, have been frozen. The local bureaucrats mistakenly reserved the village headship for a woman from an Other Backward Class (OBC) that has no residents, leading to zero nominations being filed during the election period. This error is not unprecedented; it marks the third occurrence of similar reservation mistakes in the region, with previous instances in 2005 and 2010. In those cases, elections were postponed for eight months, during which a deputy officiated as pradhan. Community leaders had proactively approached the deputy commissioner of Solan months before the elections, urging the office to unreserve the seat. However, the bureaucrats relied on an outdated 1995 OBC Commission report to finalize the local voting rosters. As a result, special elections will now need to be scheduled once the demographic classification is legally rectified, further complicating the electoral process in the area.
