The European Parliament is set to discontinue Google as its default search engine on its internal computers, opting for the French alternative, Quant, starting June 4. This decision is part of a broader initiative by EU officials to decrease reliance on foreign technology and promote digital sovereignty. An internal email indicated that this shift aligns with the Parliament's commitment to protecting users' personal data, highlighting Quant as a privacy-focused option. Users will still have the ability to switch to other search engines if they choose. France has been particularly proactive in this regard, planning to move government workstations from Windows to Linux and replacing Zoom and Microsoft Teams with the domestic video call platform Visio. The European Commission is expected to announce a sovereignty package on June 3 to further support these efforts. This trend of moving away from Google is not isolated, as DuckDuckGo reported a spike in app installs after Google's recent AI-focused changes, indicating a growing interest in alternative search engines.
