Delhi is planning to construct a 4.72 km flood wall along the Yamuna River, stretching from Majnu Ka Tila to Kashmere Gate, to protect vulnerable areas from flooding, especially during the monsoon season. The project, which has a budget of ₹50 crore (approximately $6 million USD), was approved by the Yamuna Standing Committee in February 2023. According to Parvesh Verma, the Irrigation and Flood Control Minister, this initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to improve the city’s flood management system. The wall will be constructed to stand 6 feet above the anticipated flood levels, providing an additional safety buffer for low-lying areas that frequently face flooding, such as Yamuna Bazaar and Monastery Market. The construction will include 850 meters of reinforced concrete retaining wall and 3,870 meters of brick or stone masonry to effectively prevent floodwater from entering urban areas. A tender has been issued for the project, but no construction timeline has been established yet.
