The Department of Posts in India has announced the introduction of personalised cheque books for Post Office Savings Account (POSA) holders, set to launch on May 8, 2026. This new facility aims to enhance customer convenience and security by including essential details such as the account holder's name, account number, and the Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) of the Department of Posts. Previously, cheque books issued by post offices lacked these personal details, which are standard in private and public sector banks. The new cheque books will be delivered free of charge to the customer's registered address, a significant improvement over the previous system where they had to be collected at post office counters. Customers can request these personalised cheque books by contacting their local Post Office, and the service will soon be available through internet and mobile banking. However, instant cheque books without personal details will still be offered at post office counters. To qualify for a personalised cheque book, account holders must meet specific conditions, including maintaining a minimum balance of ₹500 (roughly $6 USD) and ensuring their mobile number is linked to their account. If a cheque book is undelivered after multiple attempts, it will be returned to the Post Office and held for 45 days before being marked as spoiled.
