In a significant corruption case, two senior officials from the Central Goods and Services Tax (GST) department in Nadiad, Gujarat, were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for demanding a bribe of Rs 55 lakh (approximately $66,000 USD) to release a seized transport vehicle. The accused, Amarnath Govardhanram Saroj, a Class-2 Superintendent, and Subodh Subhash Chauhan, a Class-2 GST Inspector, were caught red-handed accepting the first installment of Rs 10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD) during a sting operation conducted in April. The operation was initiated after the complainant, who operates a transportation business, reported the demand for bribes after his goods-laden truck was seized by GST authorities. The ACB's investigation is ongoing, as they explore whether these officials are part of a broader extortion network targeting transporters in the region.
