India's peak power demand surged to an unprecedented 256.11 GW on Saturday, driven by a significant heat wave that has led to increased use of cooling devices like air conditioners. This new record surpassed the previous high of 252.07 GW, set just a day earlier, highlighting the growing electricity needs as temperatures rise across the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that several regions are experiencing temperatures 5 degrees Celsius above normal, with Delhi recording its highest temperature of the year at 42.8°C. This marks the third consecutive day of heat wave conditions. Experts warn that as heat waves become more frequent, electricity demand is likely to increase further, with the power ministry estimating a peak demand of 270 GW for this summer season. Last year's peak demand was 242.77 GW, recorded in June, which was below the government's estimate of 277 GW for that summer.
