During a Justice and Home Affairs meeting in Luxembourg, EU ministers expressed broad support for a proposal to limit temporary protection for Ukrainian men of military age. This follows the activation of the Temporary Protection Directive after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has since provided residence permits, labor market access, and social welfare to over 4.33 million displaced individuals. Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssell stated that while it is crucial to protect Ukrainians, it is equally important for men to remain in Ukraine to fight. He clarified that any restrictions would apply only to new arrivals seeking protection status, not to those already covered. The European Commission would need to propose any changes to the directive, which must be approved by EU member states. Currently, Germany accommodates the largest share of Ukrainian beneficiaries, followed by Poland and Czechia.
