The southwest monsoon officially entered Andhra Pradesh on June 4, 2023, two days later than its expected arrival date. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that it may take approximately seven to ten days for the monsoon to cover the entire state. Initial rains were reported in parts of the Rayalaseema region, including Anantapur, Chittoor, Sri Sathya Sai, and Tirupati districts. Typically, Andhra Pradesh receives about 60 to 70 percent of its annual rainfall during the monsoon season from June to September, which is crucial for replenishing reservoirs and supporting kharif cultivation. However, the IMD has indicated that this year could see below-normal rainfall due to developing El Nino conditions, which usually suppress precipitation. Despite the monsoon's arrival, hot and humid conditions are expected to persist in several coastal districts for a few more days, while thunderstorms and varying rainfall intensities are anticipated in the Rayalaseema region over the coming days.
