Farage, who initially stated he would not run for MP, reversed his decision in June 2024 and became an MP in July. The funds were reportedly used for security arrangements. The commission has acknowledged the situation and plans to respond to the Conservatives by May 12, after elections in Scotland, Wales, and parts of England. Tory party chair Kevin Hollinrake has emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, questioning what Farage may be concealing.
