Kerala, in India, is set to implement a significant educational reform by raising the minimum age for Class 1 admission to 6 years starting from the 2027-28 academic year. This decision, recommended by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), aims to align the state's education system with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Right to Education Act, 2009, which mandates free education for children aged six to fourteen. Approximately 100,000 five-year-old children will be affected, as they will not be admitted to Class 1 for an additional year, necessitating the arrangement of pre-school services to support their development.
