On April 19, the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) approved the extension of the Orange Gate-Marine Drive underground tunnel in Mumbai. Initially planned to terminate at Maratha Bhavan, the tunnel will now extend to the PM Hindu Swimming Bath & Boat Club near Girgaum Chowpatty, following a recommendation from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The ₹7,500-crore (approximately $900 million USD) project aims to alleviate traffic congestion along the iconic Marine Drive, known as the Queen’s Necklace. The revised design includes a right side alignment of 4.6 km and a left side alignment of 4.9 km. The extension is expected to enhance East-West connectivity in the city and includes plans for two tunnels originating from the Eastern Freeway, with an exit near Saifee Hospital. To accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic, the existing Marine Drive lane configuration will be expanded to four lanes towards Nariman Point and four lanes towards P D’Mello Road.
