The Delhi government is set to seek financial assistance from the Indian central government to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in residential areas. This initiative is part of a new approach under the PM E-Drive scheme, moving away from the previous reliance on cost-sharing with residents’ welfare associations (RWAs). The earlier target of installing 18,000 public and semi-public charging points by 2024 was not met, with fewer than 2,500 stations established due to reluctance from RWAs to invest without clear returns. The new plan assigns responsibility to Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) to manage the infrastructure development, ensuring demand aggregation and grid readiness. A single-window clearance system is also proposed to streamline approvals, addressing past bureaucratic delays. With central support, the government aims to significantly improve charging access, especially for two- and three-wheelers, to promote EV adoption in densely populated areas. The proposal is expected to be finalized and submitted to the Centre in the coming weeks.
