Dubai has made a groundbreaking achievement in medical science by successfully administering a newly licensed gene therapy to an adult patient with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), becoming the first city outside the United States to do so. The treatment was delivered to a 22-year-old Egyptian patient at Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital, marking only the second time globally that an adult has received this advanced therapy. Traditionally, gene therapies for SMA have been limited to infants and children under two, leaving adults with few effective options. This new development signifies a turning point in SMA treatment, potentially transforming outcomes for thousands of patients. The therapy, known as Itvisma, works by delivering a functional copy of the SMN1 gene directly into the cerebrospinal fluid, addressing the root cause of the disease. Medical experts believe that expanding treatment capabilities to adults will rewrite the life stories of many patients, allowing them to access advanced therapies previously unavailable to them. Since 2020, Dubai has treated over 190 SMA patients with advanced gene therapies, reinforcing its reputation as a hub for medical innovation.
