The annual mango and jackfruit mela organized by the Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Ltd is set to commence on May 5, 2023, at Cubbon Park in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. This year, the event will feature approximately 50 stalls dedicated to mangoes and seven stalls for jackfruit, running until May 17. Due to varying harvesting timelines caused by adverse weather and pest infestations, the mela will be held in phases. A separate event will be organized at Lalbagh Botanical Garden once mangoes from Kolar district are ready for harvest. Officials noted that recent hailstorms have damaged crops in Kolar and Chikkaballapur, causing a 8-10% drop in fruit yields in the Srinivasapura taluk. To ensure fair prices for mango growers and provide consumers with high-quality fruits, mini melas are also planned in neighborhoods such as Sahakarnagar, Electronics City, Whitefield, and Basavanagudi. This year's mela will showcase a variety of mangoes, including the GI-tagged Kari Ishad mango from Uttara Kannada and various jackfruit types, while promoting direct sales from farmers through digital platforms.
