Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, managing director of Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), stated that the adoption of piped natural gas (PNG) for household cooking could significantly increase if the price gap between PNG and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) widens. Currently, the price difference is around 10%, but Chatiwal suggests that increasing it to 30% would incentivize more households to switch. As of now, a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder costs ₹942, while PNG is available at ₹49.59 per standard cubic metre. The ongoing crisis in West Asia has prompted India to seek alternatives to LPG, which is primarily imported. The government is implementing measures to accelerate PNG adoption, including discontinuing LPG supplies in areas with PNG connectivity. IGL has identified approximately 128,000 households in the Delhi-NCR region that can be connected to the PNG network. To facilitate this, IGL has simplified application processes and organized awareness camps. Additionally, IGL plans to invest ₹2,000 crore in FY27 for business expansion, including projects in Saudi Arabia and renewable energy initiatives.
