About 30 teachers from Singapore's Ministry of Education (MOE) have taken on overseas postings, primarily in Hong Kong, to teach the Singapore curriculum. These educators, including Mr. Lim Wei Yi and Ms. Ong Shir Ling, have shared their experiences of overcoming cultural differences and adapting to new teaching environments. Mr. Lim, who teaches at the Singapore International School in Hong Kong, initially faced homesickness but has since adjusted to life in the city. Ms. Ong, seeking to reignite her passion for teaching after 25 years, found the move to be a necessary challenge. The MOE provides support through induction sessions and accommodation allowances. Teachers also gain exposure to different educational practices, which they can bring back to Singapore. However, they face challenges such as adapting to different academic calendars and assessment methods. The experience is seen as beneficial for both personal development and the Singapore education system, as these teachers integrate valuable insights from their overseas stints into their future roles.
