In response to recent worker unrest in Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, India, the labour department has launched enforcement actions against 203 contractors across 24 factories for alleged violations of labour laws. The contractors are required to pay a total of ₹1,16,05,067 (roughly $140,000 USD) to workers who were denied statutory benefits. Additional Labour Commissioner Rakesh Dwivedi highlighted that the crackdown is linked to suspicious activities of certain contractors during protests, which escalated into law and order issues. In light of these events, a high-level committee has recommended a 21% wage increase for workers in 74 scheduled employments, effective from April 1, 2026. This revised payment will be made between May 7 and May 10. The labour department is also emphasizing the accountability of principal employers in ensuring timely wage payments, with strict penalties for contractors failing to comply. Further actions against additional contractors are expected as part of a broader compliance initiative in the district.
