India's marine fish production reached 35.7 lakh tonnes in 2025, a 3% increase from the previous year, according to the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). Tamil Nadu emerged as the leading state with 6.85 lakh tonnes, overtaking Gujarat, which experienced a 15% decline in landings due to adverse weather and extended fishing bans. Kerala maintained its third position with a 2% increase. The Indian mackerel remained the most landed species at 2.70 lakh tonnes, followed closely by cephalopods at 2.57 lakh tonnes and oil sardines at 2.53 lakh tonnes. Notably, cephalopods and threadfin breams saw remarkable growth of 25% and 55%, respectively. The economic value of marine fish landings generated an estimated ₹69,254 crore ($8.3 billion USD) at landing centers, reflecting a 10.45% increase, while retail value reached ₹97,702 crore ($11.7 billion USD), up 8.43%. The improved national marketing efficiency of 70.88% indicates strong market demand, with Kerala achieving the highest efficiency at 72.83%. Dr. Grinson George, Director of CMFRI, noted that favorable environmental conditions and regulated fishing pressure played a crucial role in this recovery.
