In Mumbai, the prices of semaglutide, a widely used weight-loss drug, are expected to decrease significantly, potentially dropping to ₹500 ($6 USD) for a month's supply within the next 6-8 months. This anticipated price reduction is driven by the entry of generic brands and a sharp decline in the cost of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), which have plummeted from approximately $1,000 per gram two years ago to $125 per gram currently. Saurabh Agarwal, director at HAB Pharma, emphasized that for many patients earning an average of ₹20,000 per month, the current cost of ₹2,000 remains high. The market is also witnessing a shift as more vendors, including Chinese manufacturers, are progressing through the registration process with the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), which could further enhance competition and lower prices. Experts believe that semaglutide could become a staple treatment similar to statins in the management of diabetes and obesity.
