Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has initiated a strategic overhaul of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, aiming for a comprehensive revival that includes depot development, staff housing, and public amenities. During a review meeting, he emphasized the importance of transparency and collaboration among various stakeholders. The modernization will occur in two phases, with a focus on long-term financial sustainability. Notably, BEST-owned land will not be sold; instead, it will be developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring ownership remains with BEST. The Chief Minister also proposed integrating cultural and social facilities within depot projects, such as mini-theatres for Marathi cinema. Furthermore, a 22-year economic plan will be drafted to assess future needs for the bus fleet and manpower. To address Mumbai's parking crisis, the transformation of octroi plazas into multi-modal transport hubs is planned, which will help reduce traffic congestion by keeping private buses from entering the city. Fadnavis has mandated a strict timeline for project execution to ensure swift progress.
