David Reynolds, a 45-year-old Garda based in Westmeath, has pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behavior towards his wife, Ashley Masterson, from January 2019 until July 2022. The court heard that Reynolds recorded conversations and installed a tracker on Masterson's phone, treating her as if she were his property. Judge Keenan Johnson, who is overseeing the case, adjourned sentencing until October, emphasizing that Reynolds displayed a serious anger management issue and an outdated view of marital relationships. Masterson, who waived her right to anonymity, provided a victim impact statement detailing her emotional distress, financial struggles, and feelings of anxiety stemming from the abusive relationship. The court noted that Reynolds's phone contained 13 hours of recorded conversations, which included instances of both verbal and physical arguments. While both parties were dealing with mental health issues, Reynolds's attorney mentioned financial pressures and his involvement in his children's lives. Reynolds has been suspended from the Garda since January and may face dismissal from the force as a result of his actions.
