An enthusiast decided to breathe new life into an old Chromebook by completely removing ChromeOS and installing Arch Linux. After encountering issues with an external USB setup, they opted to wipe the device clean. Utilizing MrChromebox, they successfully installed Arch Linux and selected the XFCE desktop environment for its lightweight capabilities. To add a unique touch, the author installed the Chicago95 theme, which emulates the classic Windows 95 interface, transforming the look of the device. Although the author initially faced challenges, such as a non-functional touchpad, they found the customization process enjoyable and rewarding. This project not only revitalized the Chromebook but also provided a nostalgic computing experience reminiscent of the past. The author encourages others with old devices to consider similar upgrades, highlighting the benefits of installing Linux and applying retro themes to enhance usability and aesthetics.
