During the 'Fruit Horizon 2026' conference at the ICAR–Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH) in Lucknow, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, highlighted the urgency of improving India's fruit production systems. He stated that merely increasing production is insufficient; India must focus on quality, shelf life, processing, and export standards to establish a robust identity in the global fruit market. Chouhan interacted with farmers and stakeholders, stressing the importance of enhancing fruit quality to strengthen India's market position. A task force will be formed to address challenges faced by producers and exporters, ensuring a time-bound action plan is developed to boost farmers' income. The government is also initiating the Clean Planting Material Program in Uttar Pradesh, establishing a modern Clean Plant Centre at CISH to develop disease-free planting materials for various fruit crops. Additionally, the National Horticulture Board is working on export-oriented clusters and improving post-harvest infrastructure linked to Noida International Airport, which will significantly aid in enhancing fruit exports.
