Recent research by Spring reveals that millions of UK savers are missing out on better interest rates, with £338 billion held in accounts paying 1.5% interest or less. This situation affects 51.3 million adult savings accounts, where the average balance is £6,593. The study indicates that a significant portion of this money, about £284 billion, is in accounts with balances exceeding £10,000, leading to substantial losses in real value as inflation rises. Additionally, over 372,000 accounts hold more than £100,000, amounting to £73.7 billion, while earning an average rate of just 1.03%. As inflation continues to outpace these low rates, savers are effectively losing purchasing power. Derek Sprawling, Head of Money at Spring, emphasizes the importance of seeking better rates, as many easy-access accounts are now offering rates above 4%, creating a stark contrast with older accounts. Spring's app offers 4.30% interest and facilitates instant transfers, allowing savers to optimize their earnings.
