The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that while the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship is serious, the overall public health risk remains low. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for coordination with governments to manage the situation. The outbreak involves the Andes strain of hantavirus, which is primarily spread by rodents but can show limited human-to-human transmission. So far, eight cases have been identified, including three confirmed cases, and three deaths have been reported. Approximately 146 passengers and crew from 23 countries are currently under strict isolation and monitoring measures on the ship. Health authorities have recommended medical masks for those caring for symptomatic individuals. Investigations are ongoing to trace contacts and assess the situation further, with health agencies in multiple countries actively monitoring previously disembarked passengers.
