The Khadakwasla–Phursungi underground canal project in Pune district, Maharashtra, has made significant strides with the completion of the first 3 kilometers of its 28-km stretch. This project aims to transport clean water directly to Phursungi, thereby preventing exposure to pollutants and mitigating the risks of canal breaches that have historically caused waterlogging and damage in surrounding areas. The remaining 25 kilometers of the project is anticipated to be completed within the next three years. Currently, work is ongoing in four areas: Kolhewadi, Wadachiwadi, Dhayari, and Uruli Devachi. However, funding issues have arisen as the ₹100 crore allocated last year has not yet been disbursed by the state government. Despite this, the contractor has utilized its own resources, spending nearly ₹300 crore to maintain progress. The transition from an open canal to a closed tunnel will also free up significant land for potential urban development, including roads and public amenities, although final decisions regarding land use will be made by the irrigation department.
