The Mrinaltai Gore flyover extension in Mumbai has finally opened to traffic after a prolonged delay of over 40 months, with the contractor M/s MEPL–Gyan JV facing a penalty of ₹26 lakh for failing to meet the completion deadline. Originally slated for completion by April 30, the project was finished on May 26, 2023. The extension, which began construction in 2018, saw its costs rise significantly from ₹209 crore to approximately ₹248 crore due to various factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic, design changes, and additional construction work. Civic officials noted that these delays were compounded by the construction of nearby bridges and the need to integrate the new flyover with an existing railway overbridge. Mayor Ritu Tawde emphasized the importance of accountability in public infrastructure projects, urging that contractors should not benefit from cost overruns that ultimately burden taxpayers. The extension is expected to improve traffic movement between the Western Express Highway in Goregaon East and Ram Mandir Road in Oshiwara, and will connect with the proposed Lokhandwala interchange as part of the Coastal Road North project.
