Julian Metherell has been appointed as the next president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), set to take office in October. A long-time member of the MCC, Metherell has a robust career in global finance, having worked at Goldman Sachs and as the founder of Genel Energy. He has also been involved in cricket administration, notably serving as the non-executive chair of the Professional Cricketers' Association from 2019 to 2024. Metherell's recent work includes leading negotiations for the London Spirit's equity sale, where a consortium acquired a 49 percent stake for approximately £145 million (around $180 million USD), making it the highest-valued franchise in the competition. His appointment comes at a pivotal time for MCC, as it embraces new ownership and strategic directions influenced by the London Spirit. Ed Smith, the outgoing president, endorsed Metherell, highlighting his blend of business acumen and passion for cricket. Under Metherell's presidency, Lord's is also set to host both men's and women's Australian teams during the 2027 Ashes series.
