The Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has taken a significant step towards enhancing urban sanitation by approving a phased plan to relocate all meat, fish, and poultry shops outside city limits. This decision was made during a general house meeting at the Town Hall, chaired by Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari. Five locations have been identified for the new markets: Ramnagar, Sujabad, Ganeshpur, Avleshpur, and Shivpur. The move aims to address hygiene concerns and zoning issues, particularly during sensitive religious periods. Additionally, the corporation plans to auction 40,000 cubic metres of soil from the Jal Kal settling tank and construct six major roads under the Chief Minister Grids Scheme. The initiative aligns with sustainability efforts, as officials arrived at the meeting using e-rickshaws to support the 'No Fuel Day' initiative. In response to the relocation plan, Muslim cleric Syed Saif Abbas Naqvi expressed support, suggesting similar restrictions for liquor shops near pilgrimage sites. This initiative reflects the VMC's commitment to balancing heritage preservation with modern infrastructure development.
