The Climate Change Committee (CCC) in the UK has called for the establishment of maximum temperature regulations in workplaces to protect workers as climate change leads to more frequent and intense heatwaves. Baroness Brown, chair of the CCC's Adaptation Committee, criticized previous governments for their inadequate response to climate threats, stating that the British way of life is increasingly at risk. The CCC warns that over 90% of homes could overheat during extreme heat events, highlighting that high temperatures significantly reduce productivity and increase the risk of accidents. The committee suggests that the government should prioritize the installation of cooling technologies, such as air conditioning, in public buildings like schools and hospitals. The CCC also estimates that adapting to climate change will require an investment of about £11 billion annually, but asserts that such investments would ultimately save the UK tens of billions in long-term costs. In response, Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds acknowledged the need for robust scientific guidance and pledged to consider the CCC's recommendations carefully.
