The Deccan Queen, affectionately known as Dakkhan chi Rani (Queen of the Deccan), operates between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Pune. Launched on June 1, 1930, by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, it is the only train in India with a dedicated dining car that offers table service. Recently, on March 27, the Central Railway unveiled a refurbished dining car featuring modern furniture and design elements inspired by Warli art, enhancing the onboard experience. Swapnil Nila, chief public relations officer of Central Railway, emphasized the train's unique dining car, which includes modern pantry facilities like a microwave and deep freezer, ensuring a premium experience. Regular passengers appreciate the nostalgic value of the dining car, although some have expressed concerns over changes in food quality since the catering was outsourced to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The Deccan Queen has evolved significantly over the years, transitioning from a deluxe train to a daily service with various coach classes. Today, it operates with 16 coaches, including AC chair cars and a Vistadome coach, maintaining a travel time of just over three hours. Despite technological advancements and changes in catering practices, the Deccan Queen continues to be a cherished tradition for its scenic route and unique dining service.
