Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has strongly criticized the Indian government for the recent increases in petrol and diesel prices, despite a notable decline in global crude oil prices. In a post on social media, Kharge highlighted that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, crude oil was priced at USD 108.05 per barrel, with petrol at ₹71.51 and diesel at ₹56.71 per litre. Currently, crude oil costs less than USD 99 per barrel, yet petrol has surged to ₹102.12 and diesel to ₹95.20 per litre. Kharge pointed out that this represents a 42.8% increase in petrol prices and a 67.9% increase in diesel prices. He stressed that these hikes contribute to inflation across all sectors, impacting transportation and essential goods. As fuel prices continue to rise, Kharge called for accountability from the government, questioning why the public has not seen any relief despite lower crude oil costs. The latest price adjustments mark the fourth increase in less than two weeks, further exacerbating economic pressures on citizens.
