Kerala's Transport Minister CP John has announced that the state will implement free bus travel for women on KSRTC buses starting June 15, as part of the UDF's Indira Guarantees. He addressed concerns regarding the financial implications of this initiative, stating that the government will bear the costs, ensuring that KSRTC's operations remain unaffected. The minister described the scheme as a 'revolutionary change' aimed at attracting more passengers back to public transport and easing traffic congestion. Additionally, he highlighted the potential for KSRTC to boost revenue through better management of its assets and non-ticket revenue sources. With legacy loans totaling ₹2,600 crore, John noted that reducing interest rates could significantly alleviate financial pressure. He also announced plans to lift the recruitment freeze in KSRTC to improve employment conditions. The government is exploring various options, including the introduction of e-buses for urban routes, while maintaining diesel buses for long-distance services.
