In New Delhi, the recent 50% increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices has raised concerns among restaurant owners and street vendors about higher menu prices and potential job losses. The price of a 19 kg cylinder surged by ₹993, bringing the total cost to ₹3,371.5, up from ₹2,078.5. This marks the third consecutive monthly hike, driven by rising global energy prices due to the ongoing West Asia conflict. Manpreet Singh, honorary treasurer of the National Restaurant Association of India, highlighted the challenges faced by eateries, including supply difficulties and increasing black market activity. Many restaurants use between two to five cylinders daily, making the price increase particularly burdensome. Owners like Kabir Suri of Mamagoto noted that rising fuel and logistics costs further compound the financial strain, leading to inevitable price increases on menus. Street vendors, operating on thin margins, are also feeling the impact, with some resorting to purchasing cylinders on the black market. If the situation persists, many may face the difficult decision to shut down their businesses.
