The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India is launching an awareness campaign to encourage Indian students studying abroad to register with their respective embassies and high commissions. This initiative follows recent conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, which highlighted the need for a comprehensive database to facilitate timely evacuations. Currently, it is estimated that over a million Indians are studying overseas, but the government lacks a specific database, relying instead on foreign countries' visa statistics and data collected by Indian missions. The MEA's existing MADAD portal, intended for voluntary student registration, has only seen 41,000 registrations since its launch in 2015. The new campaign aims to improve this figure and enhance support for students facing challenges related to local laws, language barriers, and documentation. It will particularly focus on popular destinations like the United States, Canada, Germany, and emerging educational hubs such as Georgia and Uzbekistan. In Georgia, where approximately 23,000 Indian nationals reside, the newly appointed ambassador, Amit Mishra, has begun outreach efforts to understand and assist students better. The MEA emphasizes that registering with embassies can significantly aid in providing necessary support during emergencies.
