In April 2023, small-cap stocks displayed remarkable strength, with the Nifty Smallcap 250 index rising 17.10%, outpacing the Nifty 50 and Nifty Midcap 150, which increased by 7.3% and 13.22%, respectively. This marked the index's best monthly performance since May 2014, driven by improved market sentiment and renewed earnings optimism. Domestic investors significantly contributed to this rally, with ₹51,000 crore invested in April, despite foreign portfolio investors withdrawing ₹60,847 crore. Notably, 35 small-cap stocks achieved impressive gains, with HFCL leading the way at 71%. Other notable performers included Ola Electric, which surged 60.35%, and Cohance Lifesciences, which rebounded by 60% after a prolonged downturn. The surge in small-cap stocks reflects a shift in investor sentiment towards riskier assets, with mutual fund inflows into small-cap funds increasing by 61% month-on-month to ₹6,300 crore.
