The Indian government's wheat procurement is expected to decline by 69% in the 2026-27 marketing year, primarily due to the late arrival of grains in wholesale markets (mandis). Navneet Chitlangia, president of the Roller Flour Millers' Federation of India, noted that unseasonal rains have delayed wheat harvesting, leading to a significant impact on both the quantity and quality of the crop. As of now, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has procured only 1.53 million tonnes of wheat since the procurement operations began on April 1, a stark contrast to the 5 million tonnes procured during the same period last year. The minimum support price for wheat is set at ₹2,585 per quintal, while the current mandi prices are between ₹2,300-2,400. In response to domestic availability and pricing, the government has also approved the export of 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat and an additional 500,000 metric tonnes of wheat products.
