During a meeting in New Delhi, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to reconsider the height restrictions imposed on construction activities within a 20-km radius of Bengaluru's defence airports, HAL and Yelahanka. These restrictions, which exceed the general statutory rule (GSR) limit of 150 metres within a 15-km radius, affect 78% more area, significantly hindering the city's development as a global tech hub. Shivakumar emphasized that these limitations are obstructing transit-oriented planning and comprehensive mobility initiatives, potentially leading to unplanned suburban growth. He proposed leveraging advanced technology in communication, navigation, and surveillance to alleviate these restrictions, highlighting the urgent need for land in the rapidly expanding city. Additionally, he previously met with Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu to advocate for height regulations similar to those in cities like Hyderabad and Mumbai, which have more lenient building codes.
