Ahead of Eid al-Adha, Kirit Somaiya, a former MP from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has formally requested that Mumbai's Mayor, Ritu Tawde, and civic authorities prohibit religious animal slaughter in residential areas, including housing societies and chawls. His letter, dated May 16, emphasizes concerns over unauthorized goat slaughter occurring during Bakrid, which is scheduled for May 28 this year. In Mumbai, while buffalo slaughter is restricted to the Deonar Abattoir, goat slaughter is allowed at designated locations and within residential compounds with prior approval. Somaiya claims that these regulations are frequently ignored, leading to public disturbances. In preparation for the festival, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made significant arrangements, anticipating the arrival of 1.8 lakh goats and over 14,000 buffaloes at the abattoir. The BMC has allocated 1.10 lakh square metres for shelter and slaughter activities, and will deploy 500 police officers alongside extensive surveillance to ensure compliance and safety during this busy period.
