The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of an incident involving the alleged assault of Scheduled Caste women by police personnel in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has instructed the state police to conduct an immediate, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the matter. The Commission has requested a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days, which should include the status of the inquiry, registration of cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and any departmental actions against the involved officials. Furthermore, the NCW has highlighted the need for measures to prevent further harassment of the victims and their families, including counselling and legal assistance. The Commission has condemned the alleged abuse of authority by law enforcement, asserting that such actions are unacceptable and must be met with strict accountability. This incident follows another serious case involving the suicides of two sisters in Jodhpur, prompting the NCW to call for immediate action in that case as well.
