Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday, marking the transition to a new government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Accompanied by education minister Ranoj Pegu and Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, Sarma announced the dissolution of the current assembly and his role as caretaker chief minister until the new government is sworn in. The BJP achieved an absolute majority in the 126-member assembly, winning 82 seats, with its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), securing 10 seats each, bringing their total to 102 seats. The oath-taking ceremony is anticipated to occur at Khanapara in Guwahati, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend, pending his schedule after May 11. BJP leaders JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will oversee the election of the new legislature party leader, with a meeting of newly elected MLAs planned soon.
