The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has announced plans to close 150 of its charity shops as part of a strategy to adapt to rising costs and changing consumer shopping habits. The first 90 closures are scheduled to take place by March 2027, with the remainder following by March 2028. The charity, which operates 640 outlets across the UK, is facing what it describes as an 'exceptionally challenging trading environment'. Chief Executive Dr. Charmaine Griffiths emphasized the importance of these shops for communities and the charity's mission to fund vital research into cardiovascular disease. To support affected staff, the BHF will offer assistance and redeployment options where possible. In response to shifting consumer behaviors, the charity is also expanding its digital operations, including an official eBay shop. This announcement comes amidst broader challenges within the UK charity retail sector, with other organizations like Cancer Research UK and Barnardo's also announcing shop closures.
