The Karnataka Health Department has heightened surveillance in Tumakuru district, India, following the confirmation of H5N1 avian influenza in peacocks. Between April 16 and 21, 44 peacocks were reported dead in several villages, leading to laboratory tests that confirmed the presence of the virus. In response, state Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has mandated strict precautionary measures to curb the spread of the infection. This includes vigilance in zoos and bird sanctuaries, as well as the reporting of any bird deaths. The area within a 3 km radius of the bird fatalities has been designated as an infected zone, while a 3 to 10 km radius is under surveillance. Health authorities aim to screen 20,432 individuals in 38 villages for fever, influenza-like illness (ILI), and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) over the next 10 days.
