On Wednesday, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) officially recognized USA Surfing as the national governing body for surfing in the United States, effective June 1, 2023. This decision marks the end of a protracted dispute that included USA Surfing's decertification and a failed attempt by U.S. Ski and Snowboard to take over the sport's governance. USOPC chair Gene Sykes highlighted that USA Surfing's new leadership and approach were pivotal in achieving this recognition, which positions the organization to guide the sport into the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. USA Surfing had voluntarily decertified in December 2021 after a USOPC audit revealed significant financial issues. The organization later secured a multimillion-dollar endowment, enhancing its financial stability. The governance conflict escalated with U.S. Ski and Snowboard, led by former World Surf League CEO Sophie Goldschmidt, which ultimately withdrew its application in November, citing a lack of constructive dialogue. Additionally, the USOPC certified USA Lacrosse as the national governing body, as lacrosse will be included as a medal sport for the first time since 1908 at the upcoming Olympics.
