The Supreme Court of India has refused to intervene in a Calcutta High Court ruling concerning the deployment of Central government employees for vote counting in West Bengal, leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to claim that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is failing in its attempts to seize power through unfair means. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the TMC of approaching the Supreme Court out of desperation, as the party anticipates defeat in the upcoming election results, set to be announced on Monday. The Supreme Court's special bench, comprising Justices P S Narasimha and Joymalya Bagchi, stated that the Election Commission (EC) has the authority to select counting staff and that its April 13 circular, which allows for the deployment of state government employees, is valid. Trivedi criticized the TMC's legal challenges, claiming they reflect political frustration and a misuse of constitutional mechanisms. Polling for the 294 Assembly seats in West Bengal took place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results expected soon.
