In a remarkable initiative, Parel Village in Mumbai has transformed five chronic garbage dumping sites into clean public spaces, fostering community interaction. The F South ward's solid waste management (SWM) department identified 67 dumping spots and focused on five locations—Kuber Gully, Parmanand Wadi, Kohinoor Mill Chawl, Income Tax Lane, and Ganesh Nagar. The transformation involved community engagement, where officials held meetings to educate residents on the health and environmental hazards of improper waste disposal. Assistant commissioner Vrushali Ingale highlighted the structured approach, which included data collection and monitoring. Staff were deployed to track waste disposal patterns, and a door-to-door waste collection system was introduced to ensure continued garbage removal. The response from residents has been overwhelmingly positive, with Kuber Gully now serving as a pleasant meeting spot. Encouraged by the initial success, officials aim to replicate the model across all identified dumping sites, with an official inauguration planned for Friday by MLA Ajay Choudhari.
