In a podcast, Sandu emphasized that Moldova's neutrality, as defined by its constitution, should not leave the country defenseless against aerial threats. She pointed to a recent drone incident in Galati, Romania, which injured two people, as a stark reminder of the risks posed by Russian military activities. To address these concerns, Sandu is advocating for new legislation that would enable the growth of Moldova's arms industry and facilitate public-private partnerships for weapons development. This legislation would also aim to attract foreign investors to support the initiative. Furthermore, she mentioned that Moldova has begun consultations with Ukraine to gain insights into drone technology, particularly in interceptor systems, as Ukraine has significant experience in countering drone threats. Sandu's push for drone development is part of Moldova's broader strategy to enhance its defense capabilities while pursuing European Union membership by 2030.
