In Mumbai, Naseem Khan (former minister and senior Congress leader) has raised serious allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI), claiming it is flouting Supreme Court guidelines regarding the inspection of electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in the Chandivali assembly constituency. Following a close election loss to Shiv Sena MLA Dilip Lande in November 2024, Khan sought a 'diagnostic check' of the EVMs, which the Bombay High Court permitted on February 12, 2025. However, the inspection was halted amid disputes over its execution. Khan criticized the process, stating that officials only demonstrated physical connectivity between the machines instead of conducting a thorough audit. He has formally requested the ECI to adhere to the Supreme Court's directives, which emphasize the need for verification of the integrity of EVM data. Khan contends that engineers from Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), the EVM manufacturer, were reluctant to provide critical data from the Symbol Loading Units (SLUs), which could confirm the presence of candidates' names on election day. In response, S Chockalingam, the chief electoral officer, argued that Khan had selected the wrong inspection option, limiting his access to the data he sought. The situation raises significant concerns regarding transparency in the electoral process, with Khan threatening to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court if his demands are not met.
