Chandigarh's centralized e-admission portal, which facilitates college applications for thousands of students, is reportedly running on an unencrypted HTTP connection, exposing sensitive personal and academic data to potential interception. A formal complaint to the UT education department highlighted that the portal, which began accepting applications on June 1, requires users to submit confidential information, including names and passwords, without basic security protocols. This situation raises concerns about violations of the Right to Privacy as guaranteed under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. Additionally, the portal's lack of encryption contradicts the Union Ministry of Home Affairs' cybersecurity guidelines, which recommend using HTTPS sites to protect user data. While the UT's information technology director acknowledged the issue, he stated that a quick fix is not possible due to the portal's legacy infrastructure. An upgrade of the State Data Centre is in progress and expected to take three to four months, after which the portal will be secured with HTTPS.
