On Friday, a local court in Manimajra, Chandigarh, India, sentenced two men, Rahul Kumar and Ankit, to five years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a mobile phone snatching case. The case stemmed from an incident reported on September 19, 2022, where the complainant, Satnam Singh, had his mobile phone snatched. The court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Ashwani Kumar, convicted the duo under Sections 379-A and 34 of the Indian Penal Code for committing the crime with common intention. Ankit was additionally convicted under Section 411 for possessing stolen property. During the sentencing, both convicts pleaded for leniency, citing their status as first-time offenders and family responsibilities. However, the prosecution argued for strict punishment due to the crime's nature, leading the court to deny their request for probation. Along with their prison sentences, a fine of ₹25,000 (approximately $300 USD) was imposed on each convict, with additional penalties for non-payment. The sentences will run concurrently, and the time already spent in custody will be accounted for against their total sentence.
